Texting While Driving Breaks Families

Texting while driving one of the most simple things to do in your car, grab your phone and you check it in a stop light, text your mother whats for lunch right before you get home, or driving the highway, something we may think is so harmless, but boy were we wrong texting while driving is the most harmful, most dangerous, most reckless things you can possibly do while your driving the backstabbing killing machine, as we know as a car. The National Safety Council states that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year, and nearly 390,000 injuries due to cell phone use while driving.

And most of us still consider cell phone use while driving harmless.

My cousin was in a car accident, fourth of July while fireworks were going off, a truck driver was on his phone and to top it off his tail lights did not work properly. My uncle crashed head on, my aunt and uncle were buried under the car, two of my cousins knocked out and my cousin Alexis the oldest of them all bleeding out. I still remember that day like it was yesterday that day still haunts me, that pain never goes away, everyday I think of him. What hurts the most it’s knowing if that truck driver was not on his phone things would have gone differently, maybe it would have not created a broken family.

Imagine being a 10 year old boy having fun watching the fireworks, arriving at the house were your whole family is gathering, playing with your little cousins laughing with your uncles. falling asleep with a smile, falling asleep and the last thing you saw that night were pure smiles. Then suddenly you wake up at 4:00am banging at the door, your aunt opens the door drops too her knees and you turn around see your mother drop to her knees and you here the cop say “ the oldest boy is in critical condition.” The one that took care of you when your parents left, the one that raised you outside, the one who would protect you when you needed back up, the one who brought you up when things were dark. Now he is bleeding out and dying, now if you can see that from a little boy imagine what everyone else felt driver that texting, how would you feel knowing you just took a life for glancing at your phone, would you say it was an accident and hope for the best, or would you have wished you did not look at your phone, or would you have wished it was you, what would you do, I simply would not have touched my phone in the first place.
